The Commonwealth of Virginia’s Six-Year Improvement Program guides the State’s investments in transportation infrastructure. This document is updated annually by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, which is appointed by the Governor and is responsible for decision-making/approval in several key steps of the transportation construction/improvement process.
Small Urban Area Transportation Plans guide the investment of urban road funds by Virginia towns and cities that have populations less than 50,000 and are responsible for maintenance of the roads within their boundaries. The plan for each town/city is developed jointly by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the respective locality. Virginia has recognized the need for a long-range transportation plan and is in the process of developing such a document. Learn more about this effort by clicking on the following link to VDOT’s web-site for the Statewide Multimodal Long-Range Plan (VTrans 2025).
