An Electronic Materials Exchange Service

Welcome to the ARRC Rural Commodities Trader!

The Appalachian Regional Recycling Consortium
The Appalachian Regional Recycling Consortium (ARRC) is an integrated solid waste management and innovative recycling technical assistance service established to promote the beneficial utilization of locally recovered materials in the rural communities of Virginia. The ARRC offers a wide variety of information and services for local governements, community groups, business and industry including: educational information, recycling equipment and market information, regulatory and legislative information, in-region market development assistance, on site technical assistance, workshops and seminars, and regional recycling programs. For more information concerning these and other services, please contact Pat Therrien at (540) 639-9314 or e-mail: [email protected].

To expand these services the ARRC is developing a locally focused Materials Exchange Program. The ARRC Rural Commodities Trader is a comprehensive electronic newsletter to inform you of the commodities available in your area.

The ARRC Rural Commodities Trader
The Rural Commodities Trader is an online listing service for materials wanted and materials available for reuse by individuals, businesses, and local governments. There is no charge to list with or use The Rural Commodities Trader. Anyone may access and acquire the materials listed on this site by directly contacting the entity listing the material, but the listing service itself is only available to the rural communities in our service area.

Materials Exchange Programs and Integrated Solid Waste Management
In the hierarchy of integrated solid waste management, "source reduction/pollution prevention" (reducing the volume or toxicity of waste generated) and "reuse" are considered "higher priorities" than recycling. All three of these strategies are methods of conserving energy, natural resources, and biological systems and reducing the volume of materials that are placed in landfills. A commodities exchange system is one way to expand materials reuse opportunities. Even though there are excellent, large regional waste exchange programs in place, the ARRC has received numerous requests from local businesses, individuals, and recycling coordinators, who want access to a locally focused waste exchange system. This provides a mechanism for the effective exchange of smaller quantities of one-time or "lower value" materials on a local scale. With funding provided by the Southeastern Rural Community Assistance Project, Inc.(SE/RCAP), the ARRC is working on a locally focused commodities exchange system. Working with recycling coordinators, business leaders, and other interested individuals, the ARRC is developing and operating a commodities exchange service for the rural communities of Virginia. The ARRC Rural Commodities Trader is a means for local businesses and individuals to have access to materials available and needed in their area.
