Route 221 Highway Improvements

Route 221 is a primary state highway that runs through the District in Floyd County. This section of roadway enters Floyd County on the southwest side, passes through the Town of Floyd where it intersects with Route 8, and continues northeast into Roanoke County. This primary state highway provides the residents of Floyd County with one of two primary transportation routes within and to the outside of the county.

Route 221 provides direct access to the Roanoke Valley, where all types of major institutions, retail shopping, and large job markets exist for Floyd County residents. Route 221 lies just northwest of the Blue Ridge Parkway running parallel with the parkway.

With some of the most dangerous portions of two-lane highway in the District, in terms of serious injuries and fatalities, Route 221 is in need of line-of-sight improvements, widened shoulders, and straightening of several segments through Floyd County. Average Daily Travel volumes have continued to grow over the years, while the posted speed of 55 mph has held steady.
