Whitethorn Corridor Highway Development
Highway travel within the New River Valley relies on roadways that were built decades ago. Over this period of time, growth has continued with more and more travel between communities (commuting). Unfortunately, new roads have not been built to create better links between the New River Valley's Incorporated areas. In most cases, it is difficult to travel from one local community to another, as traffic and corridor development has slowed travel significantly on these main connector routes.
The Whitethorn concept is one potential link that could ease some of these growth and travel pressures. This highway concept links the northwestern portions of Montgomery and Pulaski Counties and creates a major thoroughfare between the communities of Blacksburg and Dublin. This travel corridor would ease the traffic pressures on several existing roadways, such as Route 114, Prices Fork Road, Route 11, and U.S.460. It would also create a vital link and access to the New River Valley Airport, which is expected to grow.
